About the Bucket Shop

In 1934, Louis and Katheryn Berrodin opened a small neighborhood bar on the west side of Akron and called it Berrodin's Cafe.

At that time, popcorn sat in small tin buckets on the tables where both rubber workers, neighborhood locals, and golfers coming off of the links at Portage Country Club would socialize over famous steak sandwiches.   Patrons began calling their meeting place the Bucket Shop, therefore,  a customer-oriented name change took effect.

The Bucket Shop remains as a centerpiece in the historic Highland Square block that hold stores, restaurants, and a theatre. It is the oldest business still in existence in the square.

The Berrodin family has remained the owners of the Bucket Shop over the years.  You are sure to find one of the Berrodin kids behind the gargantuan oak bar on any given day of the week.  The Bucket Shop is now managed by Louie's oldest daughter, Brigid, and her younger brother Sean.

In 1997, the Akron Beacon Journal ran a story about the life and times of The Bucket Shop and the Berrodin legacy in Highland Square.   Find out more about The Bucket Shop, and the Berrodin family by reading the article.
